Abstract

Dark tourism is witnessing an increase in the number of visitors drawn to such destinations, whether or not they are concerned with the value of death; according to consolidated market research (2022), the global dark-tourism market is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of about three per cent between 2023 and 2032, a growth in which dark tourism may participate locally. Few studies have addressed the importance of citizens' identity at dark-tourism sites, and a limited number have discussed the relationship between citizens' attitudes and the development of such sites in developing countries. Because the building and strengthening of identity, and the perceived value of dark-tourism sites, can be shaped substantially by comprehensive storytelling, this study explores the role of storytelling in influencing the attitudes of Omani citizens towards the development of dark tourism, with national identity examined as a mediating factor.
