Abstract

This study analyses the role of rose cultivation in Al Jabal Al Akhdar in achieving sustainable development in the Sultanate of Oman by exploring its economic, environmental and social dimensions. Its importance arises from the growing interest in strengthening sustainable agricultural activity as a foundation for supporting the local economy and conserving natural resources, particularly in mountain environments of unique character. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical method, analysing relevant documents and secondary sources and conducting semi-structured interviews with a number of farmers and others concerned with the agricultural and tourism sectors in Al Jabal Al Akhdar. The findings show that rose cultivation is a promising economic activity contributing to the income of local households, strengthening ecotourism and conserving plant diversity, besides its role in sustaining traditional agricultural practices. The study also reveals opportunities for developing an integrated value chain for rose products that would strengthen their economic efficiency and sustainability, and it presents an applied conception for activating the role of rose cultivation in achieving sustainable development.
