Abstract

Al Jabal Al Akhdar possesses a particularity of place, being among the ancient centres of Omani settlement; and its temperate climate allowed it to house one of the oldest endowment libraries in Oman, that of Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Sālim ibn Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyá al-Riyāmī (fl. 1116 AH), whose manuscripts — for all their age — appear as though their copyists had finished with them only yesterday. Using an inductive method, this paper surveys the memory of Al Jabal Al Akhdar — its notable figures, its places, its events and its civilizational vocabulary — as contained within the manuscripts of that library, principally by tracing the marginal notes external to the manuscript texts and by drawing on the data recorded in their colophons.
