Abstract
The endowment (waqf) represents one of the high Islamic values bearing on social solidarity in Muslim society, and Oman was not apart from it: across its towns and villages many endowments were established for varied charitable purposes and documented in the records left by earlier generations. By records is meant all endowment material found in endowment deeds, wills, gravestones, falaj registers and the oral history transmitted across generations; endowment documents of every kind are important sources for writing the local history of Omani society, for the precise detail they contain reaches beyond the preservation of the endowment itself to reflect patterns of interaction in daily life and the social relations that embody solidarity among individuals and groups. The study proceeds from a central problem: the functional role of the endowment in rooting the mechanisms of social solidarity in the society of Al Jabal Al Akhdar to the end of the fourteenth century AH / twentieth century CE, through a documentary approach analysing the available endowment formulas and registers, and asking how far these documents can contribute to reconstructing aspects of that society.
