Abstract

Livelihood sustainability refers to the capacity of individuals and communities to meet their basic needs of food, income and shelter, to adapt to environmental and economic change, and to conserve natural resources for coming generations. With the accelerating economic and environmental changes in Al Jabal Al Akhdar in the Sultanate of Oman, achieving livelihood sustainability has become a pressing necessity for preserving this system, and awareness is growing worldwide of the importance of protecting livelihoods and natural resources as a principal instrument of sustainable development, accompanied by an urgent need to activate systems for managing those resources. Studies indicate the necessity of participation by all concerned parties in decisions relating to natural-resource management, and of effective governance ensuring sound management that benefits sustainable development, which is a principal foundation for the management of the environment and its resources. Research also affirms the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with modern scientific knowledge, particularly where that knowledge has proved useful in managing natural resources and the environment, whether in theory or in practice. Within this framework the study focuses on livelihoods in Al Jabal Al Akhdar.
