Abstract
The Holy Qurʾan is God's firm rope and His straight path, a light for the individual and for the community, and the advance or retreat of a community is measured by the degree to which it holds fast to this guiding light. This paper examines an imam of the Muslims of whom history has recorded little, and the contribution of one of the notable and accomplished Omani scholars of the Qurʾan and its readings: the accomplished Imam Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Saʿīd, al-Muqriʾ al-ʿUmānī, of whom Imam Ibn al-Jazarī said that he was a skilled and accomplished master and the shaykh of the reciters of Wāsiṭ. He was the author of works on the Qurʾanic readings, among them al-Kitāb, and this study sets out his life, his writings and the place he holds in the discipline.
