Abstract
Education in Oman has passed through different historical stages and varied experiences. Since the entry of Islam into Oman in the eighth year of the Hijra, it has had an effective role in advancing education: Omanis gave their attention to understanding the Holy Qurʾan and its exegesis, which drove them to attend to the study of the Arabic language and to command its rules. The Qurʾanic schools are those educational institutions which appeared with Islam in Oman for teaching the Holy Qurʾan, Islamic culture and the Arabic language in particular. This study examines those schools — their emergence, their organisation, their methods of instruction and the place they have held in Omani society — and traces their development across the successive periods of Omani educational history.
