Abstract
The endowment is among the most prominent resources upon which people's scholarly, cultural and social life rests, given the Islamic motive to which people hold and the fact that an endowment is a continuing charity whose reward is hoped to continue after death. Teaching the Holy Qurʾan in schools and mosques had endowments of its own, whether for teachers or for learners, or for revenue spent on maintaining, extending and preserving those schools and mosques and meeting what they required in former times of lamps, lights and lanterns, so as to assist the learner and ease his study. Since the wilayat of Nizwa is a scholarly, cultural and religious centre, having been the capital of the imamate from ancient times, its people of every class engaged with these endowments, and this study takes them as its case.
