An Evaluation of Contemporary Approaches to Qurʾanic Contemplation (Tadabbur)

Abstract
The Qurʾan is God's address to creation, and contemplation is their answer to it: where exegesis reports its meaning, contemplation relates its effect in the soul and in life. This community was distinguished by a singular method in regulating the sciences — in grounding, detailing, deriving, verifying, classifying and teaching — a singular method worthy of admiration. In the present age we seek within the pages of that immense heritage what may compose a modern study gathering its scattered and its similar materials. Those working at the Tadabbur Centre have done well in attending to this subject, which stands in need of further research and study capable of founding a sound method for contemplating the Qurʾan. The study accordingly evaluates the contemporary approaches to Qurʾanic contemplation and the criteria by which they may be assessed.
