Abstract

God favoured the community of Islam by honouring it with the enduring miracle of the Qurʾan and by sending it down as a constitution to which they refer in the questions, affairs and judgements that arise, whether particular or general; and He chose from among His creation a company to set out its contents and to sound its jewels and its hidden depths. It is not hidden from the attentive reader what merits Omanis have in the service of the Book of God and its sciences since the earliest centuries. This research treats the earliest Omani efforts in the exegesis of the Book of God through the commentary al-Dirāyah wa-Kanz al-Ghināyah by Abū al-Ḥawārī Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥawārī al-ʿUmānī, setting out its method, its sources and its place among the earliest Omani works of exegesis.
