Abstract
This paper brings out the Omani efforts in establishing schools for the Holy Qurʾan — kuttāb schools and Islamic institutes — in six countries of East Africa from 1995 to 2019. The study concentrates on the role of the International Istiqama Muslim Charitable Association in founding, administering and organising these kuttāb schools, and sets out the association's approach under the following heads: the method of enabling Swahili speakers in East Africa to memorise the Holy Qurʾan; the method of distributing and administering the schools; the association's efforts in printing the noble muṣḥaf; and its efforts and method in preparing and qualifying teachers of the Holy Qurʾan. The study closes with a proposed conception for the future of this work.
