Abstract
The Omani medical heritage is attested by a body of treatises, compendia and manuscripts of which only a small part has reached us. Among them is Fākihat Ibn al-Sabīl by the Omani physician Rāshid ibn ʿUmayr ibn Thānī, one of the most notable Omani medical works recovered from that heritage; the Omani Ministry of National Heritage and Culture has issued it in several editions for the useful medical and scientific guidance it contains, in which depth of learning, precise information and rare benefits are evident. This study aims to introduce a major scientific figure of Oman's early medical tradition, to set out the Omani medical heritage and its contribution to contemporary human medicine, and to present the scientific benefits of Fākihat Ibn al-Sabīl together with an assessment of how far they can be applied in modern practice, comparing the medical information in the book with modern medical knowledge and identifying points of agreement and divergence. Its importance lies in making the medical treasures of the Omani heritage known and inviting readers to draw on them.
