Abstract

Translation is among the oldest of human activities, and it became indispensable for the non-Arabic-speaking peoples who embraced Islam and needed access to the Qurʾan and to religious learning in their own languages. This paper examines the movement to translate the Qurʾan into Azerbaijani, which began after the people of Azerbaijan accepted Islam in the seventh century and gathered pace as their scholars undertook to render the Qurʾan and works of exegesis into their language. The study focuses on Kashf al-Ḥaqāʾiq ʿan Nukat al-Āyāt wa-al-Daqāʾiq by Mir Muhammad Karim Bakuvi, written in 1904 and counted among the earliest Qurʾan translations into Azerbaijani. Issued in three volumes, the work sets commentary on the ambiguous verses alongside the translation itself. The paper argues that close study of this text is essential to understanding both the history of Qurʾan translation and the reception of the Islamic scholarly heritage in Azerbaijan.
