Abstract

This paper sheds light on the subject of the sea in Omani poetry, surveying the aspects treated by Omani poets across their several poetic schools, in classical and vernacular verse alike, together with the sung folk arts and the maritime arts in particular. It draws on numerous sources and references that have preserved a rich body of verse, and it also gives weight to fieldwork: the researcher conducted a field survey through interviews with elderly poets and with those who have memorised and transmitted the verse. The study is divided into four parts: the relationship of Omanis to the sea; their relationship to poetry; the documentary value of Omani poetry on maritime matters; and the sea in classical Omani verse, in Omani vernacular verse, in the folk arts and maritime arts, and in general usage. The paper closes with findings and recommendations.
