The Novel in the Light of Modern Linguistics: al-Ṭawāf Ḥaythu al-Jamr as a Case Study

Abstract
A novel admits of many readings. The nature of the discourse a novel offers opens the field of study to more than one analysis, since the reception of a text is relative and changes with time, perspective and method. This study aims to offer a linguistic reading of al-Ṭawāf Ḥaythu al-Jamr by Badriyah al-Shiḥḥī, the first novel by an Omani woman writer. The novel as a whole reflects a psychological crisis bound up with personal, social and ideological questions, and is filled with themes of rebellion, of social refusal of male authority, of the rejection of racial discrimination, and finally of remorse and the reproach of conscience, together with the obsession of longing for the homeland — themes with a hidden thread tying them to the author herself. Methodologically the study proceeds from the fields of modern linguistics, analysing examples from the novel that reveal the expressive power of the text by tracing its linguistic structure and observing how the author was able to create her novel in expression of her own vision and position.
