Abstract

Proverbs in every nation reflect its material and immaterial civilization, being received sayings passed down through the generations to represent the distillation of experience and of engagement with the situations of life in all their detail. Omani proverbs have with full merit portrayed for us many of the civilizational values of Omanis — values that were not a theoretical product but an induction from practical experiences and situations covering every detail of daily life, portraying the Omani's relation with himself, his household, his kin and his neighbours. This research surveys Omani proverbs inductively and questions them in order to establish the most prominent ethical and value dimensions Omanis drew from their experience to serve as a lamp for successive generations — the character by which Omanis have been known from antiquity to the present. The study is organised in an introduction, a preliminary section on Omani proverbs, their currency and their recording, and two chapters: the ethics of the Omani towards himself, and his ethics towards others.
