Abstract
Human practice has produced acts reckoned as elevated character and others as base, and the Islamic law came calling to ethics and completing its noble qualities — a call reflected in the conduct of Muslim societies, among them Omani society, which was described as being of good character even before its acceptance of Islam, on the testimony of the Prophet, and which by its Islam added character to character. In the service of grounding and rooting ethics among Omanis comes the book Khulāṣat al-Āthār by al-ʿAllāmah Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rāshid al-Ḥamsaʿīdī (11th century AH), grounding ethics in legal evidence from the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Messenger and reinforcing it with the reports of the Companions, the Successors and those after them. The book treats various aspects of ethics, etiquette, admonition and wisdom — the person's character towards his Lord, towards himself, and towards others, whether ruler or ruled, in action or in abstention. This study examines the treatment of ethics by the scholars of Oman, setting out its foundations, its evidences and examples of the wisdom deposited in this art as the book presents it.
