Abstract

The study seeks to reveal the ethical dimension in Omani voyages to Southeast Asia, treating both its content and its effects upon the people of the region. Historical accounts record that Islam entered Southeast Asia from the first Hijri century, the seventh century CE, by way of Arab merchants from Oman, Hadramawt and Yemen, and that among the earliest areas it reached in this geographic expanse were the northern coasts of Sumatra. As for the reason the people of that region were drawn to Islam, those accounts make plain that it was the ethical constitution of these merchants that in fact affected the people of the region and moved them to change the beliefs and ideas they held, and to take as their model this group of people who had come to them from distant places wholly different from their own — which confirms beyond doubt the powerful influence of this dimension within the social system. The study therefore seeks to answer the central question: what are the most prominent contents of the ethical dimension in Omani voyages to Southeast Asia?
