Practical Ethics and the Making of the Good Example: Shaykh Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥumayd al-Jāmiʿī as a Case Study

Abstract
This paper treats practical ethics from two angles, the theoretical and the applied, concentrating on the role of the good example in rooting ethics across generations. The research proceeds from an earlier field study conducted by the author within a course on education in Islam at the College of Sharia Sciences, concerning the making of the exemplar and whether it is an inherited disposition or acquired through upbringing and observation. The research reinforces this theoretical frame with a living applied model from Omani reality in the person of Shaykh Abū Surūr Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Jāmiʿī, presenting his life and the most prominent of his practical stances in which applied ethics were embodied in social, administrative and educational life. The research also treats the effect of early upbringing, and in particular the role of the mother in the making of the exemplar, analysing how such formation is reflected in the conduct of practitioners and its influence upon the traditions of the sciences and crafts and their professional ethics.
