Ethical Aspects in the Qurʾanic Exegesis of Shaykh Kahlān al-Kharūṣī: An Analytical Study

Abstract
Through history no value has been able to sound the depths of hearts and overturn the scales as ethics has: by it the states of tyrants fell, truths regained their standing, and multitudes entered the religion of God; and by it our Generous Lord described the most beloved of His creation and purest of His prophets, Muḥammad, in the words "And indeed you are of a great moral character" (al-Qalam: 4). The divine call to ethics embraced every aspect of life, calling for their presence in learning and knowledge, in trade and transactions, between ruler and ruled, between the head of a family and his household, and between an official and his employees. Some wrote of ethics with the ink of their pens, some inscribed them in conduct embodied, and others in sayings uttered; while the firmly grounded believing scholars embodied ethics in all these aspects, as was incumbent upon them as exemplars among people. Al-ʿAllāmah Shaykh Kahlān ibn Nabhān al-Kharūṣī is among those who gave this dimension the fullest attention, present in his dealings with people of every kind and emphasised in his lessons, lectures and legal opinions.
