Abstract
This research analyses the image of the Sultanate of Oman in the French press, presenting it as a distinctive model founded on a settled ethical theory that goes beyond pragmatic calculation. The research identifies four principles of this theory: the balance between authenticity and modernity, pride in identity, values-based diplomacy, and tolerance. These principles appear in Oman's maritime identity, in the Omani role as an international mediator, and in initiatives for spreading tolerance. Despite the generally positive image, the research shows that French articles do not overlook certain tensions, such as strict oversight of religious affairs, a duality in religious discourse between the muftī and official authority, and the appearance of the influence of local law upon international justice in the case of a French-Omani child. The research discusses this image and what it reveals about how Omani ethical conduct is perceived abroad.
