Abstract
This paper presents a book, by its own author, setting out a newly devised methodology for teaching reading and writing through the Holy Qurʾan using a syllable-based strategy. That strategy is among the older-and-newer teaching methods, and many of the established Arabic teaching primers rest upon it — the Baghdādīyah, the Nūrānīyah, the Makkīyah and the Ḥalabīyah among them. The book's contribution is to present the strategy in a systematic form attuned to the programmes and capacities of the modern school environment, and to apply it to the Holy Qurʾan. It rests on the premise that Arabic speech is composed of five syllable types, and that a learner who masters them and is trained to pronounce them correctly will find reading in general, and the reading of the Holy Qurʾan in particular, made easy. Training proceeds in five steps: reading the syllables in isolation; reading them within the words composed of them; and the further stages that follow.
