Abstract

Omanis contributed to the service of Arabic through composition from an early period of Islam. It is enough that the Omani al-Khalīl ibn Aḥmad al-Farāhīdī (b. 100 AH, d. 170 AH) is reckoned among the first scholars to codify several of the Arabic sciences, whether in grammar, lexicon or prosody: he was the teacher of Sībawayh, author of the Kitāb; he compiled al-ʿAyn, the first Arabic dictionary; and he founded the science of prosody. The Omani contribution was not confined to that early period but continued across the succeeding centuries — from Ibn Durayd, al-Mubarrad, Salamah ibn Muslim al-ʿAwtabī and Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Kindī, to the editor Saʿīd ibn Khalfān al-Khalīlī, Nūr al-Dīn al-Sālimī and Sayf ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Rawāḥī, among many others whose writings in the branches of Arabic helped preserve the language. Omani works vary between versification and its commentary, abridgement and elaboration, lexicographical composition, and questions scattered through the Omani encyclopaedias, treating grammar, morphology, lexicon, rhetoric, criticism and prosody. This paper values and documents these efforts and brings them to the attention of researchers for editing, study and publication.
