Abstract

This research studies the manifestations of Omani-Swahili influence in East Africa through an analytical reading of the book The Omanis and Fort Jesus by Sir Mbarak ibn ʿAlī ibn Saʿīd al-Hinawy, which is among the important historical sources documenting the Omani presence in the city of Mombasa and its role in shaping cultural, civilizational and political features within Swahili society. The book brings out the nature of the interactive relationship between Omanis and Swahilis as a relationship founded on civilizational exchange rather than domination, which formed a distinctive coastal identity whose effects extended into language, culture and social systems. The problem of the research lies in the small number of studies that have treated this book as a text revealing that influence, and the study accordingly reads it analytically as a historical and cultural source.
