Abstract

The teaching of the Holy Qurʾan holds a central place in Muslim societies as the bearer of the legal text and as a linguistic medium contributing to the rooting of the Arabic language in non-Arabic-speaking settings. Through their historical extension along the eastern coasts of Africa, Omanis were among the most prominent agents in spreading religious education, and Qurʾanic teaching in the Swahili setting in particular. The problem of the research lies in the limited number of comparative quantitative studies measuring the effect of the teaching skills and capacities of women teachers of the Holy Qurʾan in strengthening the linguistic influence associated with Qurʾanic teaching between the Omani and Swahili settings, despite the historical and civilizational role of Qurʾanic teaching as a channel of linguistic and cultural influence and interaction between the two. The study proceeds from the conference theme of mutual influence between Omanis and Swahilis.
