Abstract
The Sultanic Press established in Zanzibar in 1882 during the reign of Sultan Barghash ibn Saʿīd (1870–1888) marked the beginning of the Zanzibari press; printing houses followed, newspapers appeared and their contents diversified. There is no doubt that Arab and Omani influence had the most prominent role in the spread of Arabic in Zanzibar and in its reflection upon the Swahili language: a student of Zanzibari history finds many borrowed items and direct influence of Arabic upon Swahili, evident even in the writing of the Swahili language itself. The problem of the study is the absence of a complete archive of early press activity in Zanzibar, which makes it difficult to obtain connected and sequential press material — for the press is a mirror of the events of that period through which popular opinion and much else may be seen — while the scarcity of varied studies treating the period of the Zanzibari press has contributed to the difficulty of reading the full picture.
