Abstract

The importance of this research lies in clarifying the root factors that contributed to the emergence of the Swahili language and the political and economic circumstances through which the southern Arabian Peninsula passed during the first and second Hijri centuries. The migrations of Arab Muslims from Oman and Yemen to the coasts of East Africa took a collective form and constituted the first nucleus of the Arab presence in East Africa. The early Omanis achieved this from the first Hijri century, when the brothers Saʿīd and Sulaymān, sons of ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd of the Julandá — the two kings of Oman — migrated to the island of Lamu on the Kenyan coast in 83 AH / 702 CE and founded the first Islamic towns there, which made necessary the existence of a linguistic instrument for communication. The study traces the Omani influences that entered the Swahili language through this long process of settlement, trade and religious teaching.
