Abstract
The problem of this study is the search for the efforts made by the Omanis who ruled East Africa for more than three centuries and whose relations with the region reach back before the Common Era. The study aims to record aspects of the Omani scholarly efforts expended in the service of speakers of Swahili, a language spoken in thirteen countries. It follows the historical method, relying on the historical sources to arrive at historical fact. Among its principal findings, the research records Omani scholarly efforts in the service of Swahili speakers in translating the meanings of the Holy Qurʾan and the Prophetic Sunnah, in teaching Arabic to Swahili speakers, and in producing the first Arabic-Swahili dictionary. The Omani imprint on Swahili civilization appeared through the efforts of men of Omani origin whose aim was to spread Islamic civilization in East Africa and to serve those who speak Swahili; among them were those who translated the meanings of the Holy Qurʾan into that language.
