Abstract
Oman has been bound to the outside world since the dawn of history by a civilizational connection in which the image of mutual influence appears plainly, as a result of intellectual and cultural contact with other civilizations. From the beginning Omanis were not in the position of spectators upon events but principal players, engaging with such means and capacities as they possessed so as to stand at the heart of civilizational witness and keep pace with advanced nations. Yet to the same degree that this openness opened doors of gift and gain to Omanis, certain hardships obstructed their historical course, for continuous movement in human interaction is never free of tensions carrying every expectation within them. What gladdens the soul is that Omanis dealt with all these circumstances with wisdom and deliberation. The people of Oman travelled every road that opened doors of good to them and to their descendants, and this paper traces those land and sea routes.
