Abstract

Oman and its various ports occupied a considerable commercial standing across the ages: it was a trading station and a centre for the discharge, loading and distribution of goods, besides being the most important station at which ships halted to take on the provisions and water they needed for their voyage to the lands of the East. On the other side, the port of Khānfū (Canton) was among the most important ports in China with which Omanis maintained commercial contact, and it controlled all the trade entering China and departing for Oman. The political disturbances that took place in China following the outbreak of the Huang Chao rebellion in 264 AH / 878 CE had their effect in changing the course of the friendly relations that had bound the two, and this study examines that effect as the Islamic sources relate it.
