Abstract
This paper treats the maritime routes and passages used by ships in their commercial and cultural voyages between the region of the Arabian Gulf and the countries of Southeast Asia and China, later known as the Spice Routes. The Spice Route is the maritime portion of what is known as the Silk Roads: the Silk Road comprises land and sea routes across which people from every region of the world exchanged silk and a great many other goods. The maritime routes are a substantial part of this network, forming a link that bound East to West. The paper traces the courses of these routes, the ports along them and the seasonal conditions that governed sailing, and sets out the place of Oman within the network as a point of transit, provisioning and exchange between the two ends of the Indian Ocean world.
