Abstract

This research comprises two principal parts. The first identifies the commercial goods by description and principal uses, the most notable of these goods being the afāwiyah — the spices that flavour food and drink — together with precious stones, the materials from which perfumes and incense are extracted, precious metals such as gold and silver and base metals such as iron and lead, in addition to scented and unscented woods, garments and dyeing materials. The second treats the commercial centres and the principal goods imported from and exported to them, setting out the trading ports of China, Indonesia, Malaysia and the neighbouring countries. Spices, defined as the substances added to foods and drinks to give them a pleasant flavour and appetising taste, represent the most important commercial goods imported from East and Southeast Asia, given their principal use in seasoning food and drink.
