Abstract
The greatest contribution of Islam to the life of the peoples of this region was the spread of Islam and of the Arabic language, so that Arabic became the language read and written where Sanskrit and certain local languages, Malay above all, had prevailed. The Muslims there spoke it, and so Arabic became their language while their original languages gradually receded. This research sheds light on that influence of Arabic, the language of the Holy Qurʾan, in the region, and is divided into principal parts: the ancient ties between the Arabs and the countries of Southeast Asia; the effect of Arab trade with Southeast Asia in spreading Islam and the aspects of its civilization; and the effect of Arabic on the languages of the region, which comprises the reasons for the spread of Arabic in the region and the influence of Arabic letters and vocabulary upon local speech.
