Trade Routes between Oman and China: The Incense Route as a Case Study

Abstract
Oman has witnessed across its deeply rooted history a civilizational movement whose traces are examined here in three parts. The first treats Oman's historical relations with the region of Southeast Asia and China, opening with an introduction to Oman's historical relations with the civilizations of the ancient world, then the civilizational contact between Oman and the region of Southeast Asia and China, and the factors that contributed to the flourishing of commercial relations between them, including the frankincense tree and the economic importance of frankincense. The second part treats the maritime route extending from the ports of Dhofar to the ports of China, known as the Incense Route, and sets out the ports of Dhofar, the ports of Southeast Asia and China, and the land and maritime Silk Roads. The third part treats Omani civilizational influences upon the region: the role of Omanis in spreading Islam there, and the cultural, economic, social and architectural influences that followed.
