Abstract

The land of Sumer and the Arabian Gulf possessed objective foundations for contact: geographic proximity, similarity of climatic elements, and the need of each party for the other in a form approaching economic complementarity. The ties between the two were not confined to economic relations but included the civilizational and political dimensions, since the Arabian Gulf region was among the areas of Sumerian influence under their successive states and political systems, which placed the Gulf under the influence of Sumerian civilization in all its aspects. The commercial ties of the Sumerians with the Arabian Gulf reach back to the fourth millennium BC: their ships plied its waters from that time and moved between its coasts and trading centres carrying Sumerian products and manufactures such as textiles, clothing, grain, vegetable oils and hides. The study examines what the land of Sumer required in return from the Gulf.
