Abstract
This study seeks to answer an essential question: to what extent did the Ibāḍīs contribute to the movement of Islamic expansion in the lands of West Africa? The question is a timely one, since the historical sources abound with the Ibāḍī role in the Islamisation and civilisation of East Africa, whereas we find a severe scarcity — and perhaps a deliberate obscuring — in the historical sources concerning the Ibāḍī role in the movement of Islamisation and civilisation in West Africa, for historical reasons and circumstances. To answer this question the study follows a historical-analytical method applied to the few available sources on the history of Islam and its civilization in the lands of the Western Sudan, on Ibāḍī relations with its early kingdoms, and on some of the probable intellectual and cultural traces remaining from the Ibāḍī presence there.
