Abstract
Heritage is the title of the civilization of nations: the inherited gathers the civilizational features in a historical direction and comprises the marks of ancient culture in the form of customs, traditions, conventions, remains, and architectural and civilizational evidence. In Oman there exists a civilization of connected links covering the land of Oman in the pre-Islamic ages; and in the Islamic ages Oman had a flourishing civilization not much less than its counterparts in the other lands of Islam, if it did not surpass them in certain respects connected with trade and navigation. Beyond this, Oman was prominent in other fields, among them the sciences, thought, culture and architecture, harmonised in an urban and civilizational chain befitting the seasons of modern and contemporary culture. Across history Oman formed an active civilizational centre interacting from antiquity with all the centres of civilization in the ancient world, as the archaeological discoveries confirm, and this study examines how that heritage has been held between authenticity and modernity in the era of Sultan Qaboos.
