Abstract

This paper treats an important subject bearing on cultural communication between Algeria and Oman through the activity of Shaykh Ibrāhīm Aṭfayyish, who is among the prominent figures of the Mzab Valley and of the Algerian reform movement. Shaykh Aṭfayyish was among the scholars who carried the message of learning, education and the defence of Arab-Islamic identity. He suffered, as did the rest of his countrymen, under the harsh colonial conditions in which Algeria lived, and observed at close hand the suffering of his fellow citizens from oppression, ignorance, disease, exclusion and marginalisation — factors that drove him to move to Tunisia in search of learning and then to Egypt, where his course took an important turn through his intellectual, cultural and political activity and his contact with eminent scholars and thinkers. The importance of the subject lies in bringing out Shaykh Ibrāhīm Aṭfayyish's activity in Egypt and his role in communication among the members of the Arab-Islamic community.
