Abstract
Travel literature has enjoyed considerable attention from historians, the educated and the general public since the late seventeenth century, and many of the foreign travellers who visited Oman sought to record their observations, opinions and impressions of the country with precision. What was written in those works undoubtedly requires extensive study to bring out the foreign view of the various aspects of life in Oman. The nineteenth century was chosen as the temporal frame of the study for the richness of European writing on Oman in every field during that period, and because it witnessed competition among European states to establish commercial relations with Oman as colonial rivalry between Britain and France intensified over exploiting Oman's strategic position. The study aims to introduce Wellsted's journey to Oman, its circumstances and stages, and to clarify the economic and social aspects it records.
