Abstract

This study brings out the role of Sultan Barghash ibn Saʿīd, sultan of Zanzibar, in the scholarly and cultural movement of the island during its subjection to the Sultanate of Oman. His travels to the regions of the earth led him to carry to Zanzibar the art of printing, which contributed substantially to the cultural scene and established a modern scholarly system keeping pace with the developments of that period. Although most of what was printed was confined to the religious side, it nevertheless contributed to strengthening belief among Zanzibaris and enriched the holdings of the Muslim scholars who chose to remain on the island, while allowing them to contribute to the spreading of their ideas. The study examines the founding of the Sultanic Press as the exemplary case of this contribution and its effects on scholarship and culture in Zanzibar.
