Abstract
The noble Prophetic biography has held a cherished place in the Omani consciousness, and this celebration is reflected in Omani literature: their attention to the sīrah in verse exceeded what their talents produced in prose. This research treats a literary and scholarly tendency among the scholars of Oman, namely the use of versification in treating the Prophetic biography, as an extension of their approach to versifying the religious and linguistic sciences. They took the rajaz metre as a means of instruction, of easing memorisation and of bringing the events of the sīrah close to students and to the general public. These poems formed an important part of Omani attention to the Prophetic biography, yet — so far as the researcher has been able to determine — they have not received an independent study revealing their scholarly method and artistic characteristics. The research is concerned with poems treating the events of the sīrah from the Prophet's birth to his death, or treating a part of it such as his campaigns, and aims to enumerate the Omani versified corpus across the ages, classify its thematic units, and extract its shared methodological and artistic features.
