Abstract

This research treats the dynamics of transformation in the social field of the mountain villages of Al Jabal Al Akhdar in the Sultanate of Oman, as socio-cultural systems formed through a historical process of complex interaction between people and their harsh natural environment. It proceeds from a theoretical framework drawn from the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, employing the concepts of habitus, field and capital — social and symbolic — to analyse the mechanisms by which collective practices are reproduced and mountain identity manifested. The study argues that the entry of modernity after 1970 acted as a seismic force that reshaped the mental and value structure of mountain society, producing what Bourdieu terms the disintegration of the traditional field. Using a descriptive-analytical method, the findings record a sharp movement from a shared domain founded on physical proximity and obligatory mutual support towards isolated islands imposed by modern urban planning and individualist tendencies. The study also reveals the commodification of labour and the retreat of the traditional system of gift exchange in favour of wage employment, with a consequent weakening of the bonds of solidarity.
