The Names of Al Jabal Al Akhdar
Asmāʼ al-Jabal al-Akhḍar
أسماء الجبل الأخضر
Abstract
Al Jabal Al Akhdar is the name by which the mountain is known today and the most celebrated of its names, but the mountain has borne other designations, mentioned in scattered form in the historical and other sources, and likewise in documents, deeds and manuscript judgements. Some authors have gathered a number of them: Ibn Ruzayq mentions five names for the mountain in a single passage — al-Jabal al-Akbar, Jabal Banī Riyām, al-Jabal al-Akhḍar, Raḍwá and Ruḍwān — and the author of al-Salwá adds two more, Jabal al-Yaḥmad and Jūban, while Maḥmūd al-Ṣaqrī mentions them in the third issue of the journal al-Dhākirah. This paper sets out those designations and discusses the history of each name, the reasons for its use, the sources that record it, its correct vocalisation where this is needed, and the historical questions connected with it.
