Abstract

In mountain regions of semi-arid climate such as Al Jabal Al Akhdar, olive cultivation is a promising agricultural undertaking that strengthens food security and diversifies sources of agricultural income. This study examines the olive value chain in Al Jabal Al Akhdar from agricultural production through harvesting, processing, marketing and consumption. Its aims are to identify strengths and weaknesses and to seek means of increasing productivity and maximising added value. Using a descriptive-analytical methodology, the study gathers field data from producers and farmers and examines cost and return indicators at different points along the value chain. Studies indicate that the olive value chain consists of several interconnected stages — production, collection, processing and distribution — with substantial variation in the level of added value between them. Agricultural production costs also form a large share of total expenditure, around seventy per cent in some systems, which directly affects farmer participation. The sector faces significant obstacles, among them weak marketing, few local markets, and insufficient integration among its segments.
