Abstract
The elegy of Shaykh ʿĀmir ibn ʿAlī ibn Masʿūd al-ʿAbādī al-Nazwī (d. 1253 AH) for Shaykh Khalfān ibn Salām ibn Khamīs ibn Mubārak al-Muṣʿabī al-Riyāmī (fl. 1240 AH) runs to some ninety verses of great eloquence and solidity of style — closer to a string of rare pearls, indeed a muʿallaqah shaped by its author as a description and a sincere, ardent lament for one dearly lost. The research traces this elegy from a linguistic perspective and sounds the depths of its refined expression and diction. It is preceded by a brief account of the man elegised and his standing, followed by the text of the elegy as it stands in the manuscript, with any solecism or omission indicated in a distinct colour and the correct reading proposed in a footnote. The study offers a surveying linguistic view rather than a critical edition, covering the general lexicon of the vocabulary, the lexicon of nature, the lexicons of time and place, and the lexicon of titles, colours and sounds, together with a view of the elegy's artistic characteristics and its external and internal structure.
