Rose-Water Production in Al Jabal Al Akhdar: A Historical Reading of the Craft Heritage and the Foundations of Sustainable Development

Abstract
This study treats rose-water production in Al Jabal Al Akhdar in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate of the Sultanate of Oman as one of the most venerable Omani crafts, so closely bound to the mountain's name that it has become a fixed mark in the cultural memory of the Gulf and the Arab world. It offers a critical historical reading of the craft in the modern and contemporary periods — the twentieth and twenty-first centuries — by tracing the historical roots of rose cultivation on the mountain; describing the traditional craft system of distillation with its implements and local terminology (al-dahjān, al-manāṣib, al-birmah, al-khirs and the false floor); recording the economic and social dimensions of the craft in the village communities of al-ʿAyn, al-Sharījah, Sayq, al-ʿAqr, Wādī Banī Ḥabīb and al-Qashʿ; and analysing the foundations of its sustainable development in the light of the rapid transformations the mountain has undergone. The study adopts an integrated method combining descriptive history with exploratory fieldwork, drawing on classical and modern Omani sources, refereed journals, official reports and the records of foreign travellers.
